BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Vermont health officials are warning the public about the danger of rabies after a stray cat in Charlotte tested positive for the disease.
The Vermont Health Department says a stray cat was seen last Tuesday with symptoms including not being able to use its hind legs, loud meowing, and heavy drooling. The cat, an 11-pound male grey tabby, was brought in the next day for testing.
Officials are warning local residents to keep any eye on their pets because the cat was infectious starting April 28. They say if an individual has been exposed to a potentially rabid animal, to contact a health professional. They also say to make sure all family pets are up to date with rabies shots.
