BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) Vermont utility workers are heading to the Virgin Islands to help get the power back on.
We told you how hurricanes Irma and Maria slammed the U.S. territories, knocking out power to thousands of people.
Now, the Burlington Electric Department, the Stowe Electric Department and the Washington Electric Department are sending two-person crews to help.
"We're up for the challenge. I think it's going to be a good learning experience for all of us and, obviously, it's going to be great to go down there and do our best to try to help out the people of St. Thomas," said Drew Gabriel DeLorme, an apprentice lineman at BED.
The crews leave Sunday to drive to Florida. Their trucks will be loaded onto a barge to get to the islands. The crews will be flown there Oct. 16. They will live on a ship offshore while working. After four weeks, the original crews will be replaced with fresh crews.
