BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) There's an upcoming meeting regarding the future of bridge connecting Burlington and Winooski.
It's happening this Tuesday at the UVM Medical Center. The bridge was built over 90 years ago, and officials say it's time for either a renovation, or to build a new bridge entirely. A study has been on-going to look at the impacts on traffic and alternative designs for the bridge. Officials planned the meeting to hear concerns and gather the public’s input. There are current concerns about bicyclist and pedestrian safety on the bridge. Proposed plans call for either widening the current bridge to fit bike lanes and a sidewalk, or potentially building a separate bike bridge.
“To actually see a solution, to actually see a new bridge actually, it’s going to be a number of years into the future,” said Chittenden Country Regional Planning Commission’s Peter Keating.
The project is expected to heavily impact traffic once it's started. Officials hope to hear input from the public to help in the planning process.
