YCQM: Feb. 4, 2018

BURLINGTON, Vt. >> Announcer: FROM WCAX, THIS IS
"YOU CAN QUOTE ME."
>> Darren: GOOD MORNING,
EVERYONE. I'M DARREN PERRON.
RIGHT NOW ON "YOU CAN QUOTE ME,"
SUPER SUNDAY.
THE PATRIOTS AND EAGLES FACE OFF
IN SUPER BOWL LII LATER TODAY.
WE'LL BREAK DOWN THE MATCH-UP A
BIT LATER.
ALSO, REACTION TO THE STATE OF
THE UNION AND ANALYSIS OF WHAT
PRESIDENT TRUMP SAID.
PLUS, THE CEO OF A VERMONT
UTILITY MIGHT NOW WANT TO LEAD
THE STATE, AND THAT'S WHERE WE
BEGIN THIS MORNING.
SHE IS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING A
RUN FOR GOVERNOR.
CHRISTINE HALLQUIST TELLS
CHANNEL 3 NEWS SHE WOULD RUN AS
A DEMOCRAT AND CHALLENGE
REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR PHIL SCOTT
IN THE COMING ELECTION.
HALLQUIST IS THE CEO AT VERMONT
ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE.
SHE TELLS US SHE'S TAKING THE
MONTH OF FEBRUARY TO DECIDE IF
SHE'LL TOSS HER HAT IN THE RING.
SHE COULD MAKE HISTORY AND
HEADLINES BECAUSE SHE IS
TRANSGENDER.
YOU MIGHT REMEMBER HALLQUIST
INVITED CHANNEL 3 NEWS TO TELL
HER STORY OF TRANSITIONING A FEW
YEARS AGO.
THIS MORNING, EVA McCANN SITS
DOWN WITH HER.
>> Eva: WHY DO YOU WANT TO RUN?
>> Hallquist: I WANT TO RUN
BECAUSE I LOVE VERMONT.
I LOVE VERMONT AND HOW WE ALL
WORK TOGETHER.
I GO ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN MY
JOB AS A UTILITY MANAGER AND I
LOOK AT HOW PEOPLE WORK WITH
REGULATORY AND LEGISLATURE IN
OTHER STATES AND IT'S SO NICE TO
COME BACK TO VERMONT WHERE WE'RE
ALL PULLING TOGETHER, WE'RE
RESPECTFUL, WE'RE DECENT, AND
VERMONT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE
FIRST IN CIVIL RIGHTS.
I FEEL THAT OUR VERMONT WAY OF
LIFE IS THREATENED WITH THE HEAD
WINDS THAT ARE COMING FROM
WASHINGTON.
>> Eva: WHY AND HOW?
>> Hallquist: I ALSO FEEL WE'RE
THREATENED FINANCIALLY.
WE SEE EXAMPLES OF WHAPG WITH
BURLINGTON IF WE DON'T STEP IN
LINE WITH IMMIGRATION, FUNDING
CAN GET PULLED.
I BELIEVE WE'RE SEEING OVERREACH
OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND
IT'S ALL ABOUT THOSE POLICIES OF
CREATING ENEMIES, GOING AFTER
THE OPPRESSED, AND I, I DON'T
WANT TO SEE THAT HAPPEN IN
VERMONT.
>> Eva: WHAT OTHER ISSUES DID
YOUR PLATFORM INCLUDE?
>> Hallquist: WELL, I ALSO
BELIEVE IN MINIMUM WAGE OF $15.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE -- AT WHAT'S
HAPPENING TECHNOLOGICALLY ACROSS
THE NATION, WE'RE SEEING JOBS
BEING DISPLACED BY AUTOMATION,
WHICH IS A GOOD THING.
WE WANT TO GET MORE PRODUCTIVE,
AND SO IN MY TRAVELS, I HAVE A
GOOD FRIEND WHO IS A CEO IN
KENTUCKY WHERE PEOPLE LOST THEIR
JOBS, COAL MINERS LOST THEIR
JOBS.
IT DISRUPTS FAMILIES, IT
DISRUPTS COMMUNITY, AND WE DON'T
HAVE SAFETY NETS WITH THAT AND
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT NOW WITH
DRIVERLESS AUTOMATION, WE'RE
LOOKING AT TRUCKING INVESTING
HEAVILY IN DRIVERLESS
AUTOMATION, WE'RE GOING TO SEE
PEOPLE LOSE THEIR JOBS FOR
DRIVING VEHICLES.
WE NEED TO HAVE STRONG SAFETY
NETS AND I WILL ALSO ADD THAT IN
THE LATE '60s, IF WE LOOK AT THE
INFLATION FROM THE LATE '60s,
OUR MINIMUM WAGE WOULD BE $22
RIGHT NOW.
SO I DON'T THINK IT'S A QUESTION
OF IF WE'RE GOING TO DO $15 AN
HOUR, IT'S A QUESTION OF WHEN.
I ALSO BELIEVE HEALTHCARE IS A
VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE.
WE SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON
HEALTHCARE IN THIS NATION.
WE NEED EVERY CITIZEN TO DESERVE
THE RIGHT TO GOOD HEALTHCARE AND
THAT IS REALLY SOMETHING WE HAVE
TO WORK WITH THE OTHER STATES
ON.
>> Eva: IT WOULD BE SAFE TO SAY
AT LEAST ONE DEMOCRAT IN THE
PRIMARY, JAMES EHLERS, AND WHAT
SETS YOU APART FROM HIM?
>> Hallquist: I BELIEVE I HAVE
DEPTH IN MANY AREAS.
IF YOU LOOK AT WHAT I'VE DONE IN
TERMS OF ENERGY AND MY BUSINESS
EXPERIENCE OF TAKING VERMONT
ELECTRIC CO-OP FROM BASICALLY
JUST ABOUT BANKRUPT IN THE STATE
TO WHERE IT IS TODAY, AND THE
ENERGY WE HAVE AT THE
COOPERATIVE, I CAN -- I SURROUND
MYSELF WITH GOOD PEOPLE AND
THOSE PEOPLE ARE REALLY HAPPY
AND WE ALL WORK TOGETHER.
SO CREATING THAT ENERGY AND THE
BUSINESS EXPERIENCE, ALSO
COMBINED WITH THE FACT THAT I
HAVE CONTINUED TO WORK THESE
CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES ON A
PERSONAL ISSUE, YOU KNOW, SO
IT'S -- SO I CAN HANDLE MULTIPLE
ISSUES AND I DON'T -- I'M
UNFLAPPABLE.
>> Eva: WHAT'S GOVERNOR SCOTT
DOING WRONG?
>> Hallquist: I WOULDN'T SAY --
YOU KNOW, I LIKE GOVERNOR SCOTT,
I VOTED FOR HIM.
I'M ACTUALLY REGISTERED AS A
REPUBLICAN RIGHT NOW, BUT I WILL
SAY -- I THINK OF GEORGE AIKEN,
I LIKE TO SAY HE WAS MY FAVORITE
DEMOCRAT.
HE WAS A REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR
FROM '37 TO '41 AND THEN WENT ON
TO REPRESENT US AS A REPUBLICAN,
BUT IT'S ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND
STRENGTH FOR OUR PRINCIPLES.
YOU KNOW, I LIKE -- I'M GOING TO
GO BACK TO GOVERNOR AIKEN AGAIN,
WHO FOUGHT McCARTHYISM, WHO
STOOD TALL FOR CIVIL RIGHTS AND
AT THE SAME TIME REALLY TOOK
CARE OF RURAL AMERICA.
I WANT TO TELL YOU, RURAL
VERMONT IS NOT RECOVERING LIKE
CHITTENDEN COUNTY.
WE'RE NOT SEEING THE RECOVERY IN
THE NORTHEAST KINGDOM AND THE
OTHER AREAS OF VERMONT.
IT'S A MICROCOSM OF WHAT'S GOING
ON IN THE NATION.
NATIONALLY IF YOU LOOK AT RURAL
AMERICA AT THE TURN OF THE
CENTURY, ONE IN FIVE COUNTIES
WAS IN POVERTY LEVEL.
NOW IT'S ONE IN THREE.
WE'RE SEEING THE SAME THING IN
RURAL VERMONT, SO I DO HAVE SOME
IDEAS ABOUT HOW WE CAN GROW THE
VERMONT RURAL ECONOMY.
>> Eva: YOU WERE TREMENDOUSLY
BRAVE TO SHARE YOUR TRANSITION
WITH ALL OF US.
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO VERMONTERS
WHO ARE STILL NOT THERE, WHO
STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT
MEANS TO BE TRANSGENDER AND ARE
NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS?
>> Hallquist: WELL, I WOULD SAY
LOOK AT MY RECORD, LOOK AT WHAT
I'VE DONE.
YOU KNOW, I'M NOT ASKING PEOPLE
TO FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH ME
BEING TRANSGENDER.
I HAPPEN TO BE A LEADER WHO
HAPPENS TO BE TRANSGENDER.
I WOULD HAVE THEM OVERLOOK THOSE
DIFFERENCES JUST LIKE THEY WOULD
OVERLOOK DIFFERENCES WITH ANY
OTHER STRANGER.
IT'S -- I WOULD ENCOURAGE THOSE
FOLKS TO LISTEN TO WHAT I HAVE
AND LOOK AT MY BACKGROUND RATHER
THAN WHO I AM THAT MIGHT OFFEND
THEM.
>> Eva: DO YOU THINK THAT THAT
IS A STRENGTH?
IS THAT PART OF -- GOING TO BE
PART OF THE CAMPAIGN, YOUR
TRANSGENDER IDENTITY?
>> Hallquist: I'M NOT GOING
TO -- IT'S NOT PART OF MY
CAMPAIGN, BUT IT HAS TAUGHT ME
SO MUCH.
I'LL TELL YOU ONE THING I'M
ALMOST EMBARRASSED TO SAY.
I LOOK BACK AT HOW NAIVE I WAS
TOWARDS GENDER BIAS.
WHEN I WAS A MAN, I DIDN'T
REALIZE ALL THOSE SUBTLE THINGS
THAT GO ON WITH MEN AND WOMEN,
AND I'LL GIVE THE, YOU KNOW, ONE
SIMPLE EXAMPLE.
AFTER I TRANSITIONED, A STRANGER
ON THE STREET SAID, SMILE
SWEETIE, AND AS A MAN, NOBODY
EVER TOLD ME TO SMILE.
IT'S LIKE, I DON'T FEEL LIKE
SMILING, YOU KNOW.
AND I HEAR THAT OFTEN.
AND I CAN GIVE LIST AND LIST AND
LIST OF ALL THE DIFFERENT SUBTLE
THINGS THAT GO ON IN OUR CULTURE
WITH MEN VERSUS WOMEN AND I SEE
A VERY -- IT'S VERY IMPORTANT
WHAT'S HAPPENING TODAY WITH THE
ME-TOO MOVEMENT.
I SHOULD ALSO TELL YOU THAT,
THAT HAS INSPIRED ME AS WELL.
>> Eva: YOU SAID YOU'LL MAKE A
FINAL DECISION ABOUT RUNNING BY
THE END OF FEBRUARY.
WHAT FACTORS ARE YOU STILL
CONSIDERING?
>> Hallquist: WELL, I WASN'T
SURE HOW WELL I'D BE RECEIVED.
CERTAINLY THIS DISCUSSION WE'RE
HAVING HERE, YOU KNOW, THE WAY
THINGS ARE -- HAVE BEEN RECEIVED
WITH THE SEVEN DAYS ARTICLE, I'M
SENDING OUT FEELERS BECAUSE, YOU
KNOW, IT'S ONE THING TO THINK
YOU CAN RUN FOR OFFICE AND THE
OTHER SIDE IS AM I GOING TO HAVE
THE SUPPORT I NEED.
I'M VERY IMPRESSED JUST IN THE
FEW HOURS WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT
I'VE RECEIVED.
OUT OF CONSIDERATION FOR MY
BOARD, YOU KNOW, I WILL MAKE THE
DECISION BY FEBRUARY 20th.
I STILL HAVE A JOB TO DO,
VERMONT ELECTRIC CO-OP.
I WANT THAT TRANSITION TO BE
SMOOTH.
I WANT TO WORK WITH MY STAFF TO
IDENTIFY HOW THAT CAN HAPPEN, SO
I REALLY DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANY
FINAL COMMITMENTS UNTIL FEBRUARY
20th.
>> Eva: IF YOU DECIDE TO GO
AHEAD AND RUN, WILL YOU LEAVE
YOUR POSITION?
>> Hallquist: YES, YES, I WOULD.
THAT'S WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
TODAY AND THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO
TAKE TIME TO PREPARE EVERYONE
FOR, MAKE SURE WE HAVE A GOOD
PLAN.
I'M VERY HAPPY WITH WHERE OUR
COOPERATIVE TODAY IS.
IT'S BEEN, YOU KNOW, MY LIFE'S
WORK TO GET US TO THE POINT
WHERE WE CAN TALK BEYOND THE
METER AND BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THE
ELECTRIC GRID TO HELP SOLVE
CLIMATE CHANGE.
THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WHETHER
I'M THERE OR NOT, SO I FEEL GOOD
ABOUT WHERE THE CO-OP IS, WHERE
OUR CULTURE IS, AND I'M VERY
PROUD OF WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW.
>> Eva: HOW MANY YEARS HAVE BEEN
THERE NOW?
>> Hallquist: I'VE BEEN THERE
FOR 18 YEARS AND I'VE BEEN THE
CEO FOR 12 YEARS.
>> Eva: THAT WOULD BE HUGE TO
LEAVE.
IS IT WORTH IT?
>> Hallquist: THIS IS ABOUT MY
CHILDREN AND MY CHILDREN'S
CHILDREN.
THIS IS ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT
VERMONT IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE
FOR MANY GENERATIONS FOR COME.
THIS ISN'T REALLY ABOUT ME, AND
IT'S REALLY ABOUT WHAT CAN --
WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP US GET
THROUGH THESE DIFFICULT TIMES.
>> Eva: THANK YOU SO MUCH AND
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU.
>> Hallquist: THANK YOU.
>> Darren: ALSO IN THE RACE FOR
GOVERNOR, ETHAN SONNEBORN, A
13-YEAR-OLD MIDDLE SCHOOL
STUDENT FROM BRISTOL, AND AS EVA
MENTIONED, JAMES EHLERS.
HE'S ALSO A DEMOCRAT, AN
ENVIRONMENTALIST, AND THE
EXECUTIVE ORDER AT LAKE
CHAMPLAIN INTERNATIONAL.
HE'LL APPEAR ON "YOU CAN QUOTE
ME" LATER THIS MONTH.
UP NEXT IN THIS BROADCAST,
REACTION AND ANALYSIS OF
PRESIDENT TRUMP'S FIRST STATE OF
THE UNION ADDRESS, AND LATER, A
LOOK AT THE MATCH-UP BETWEEN THE
PATRIOTS AND THE EAGLES.
CHANNEL 3 SPORTS DIRECTOR JOINS
ME IN JUST A BIT.
>> Darren: THE LATEST NEWS AND
WEATHER AT THE TOP OF THE HOUR.
SCOTT'S IN THE NEWSROOM WITH
WHAT THE WEEKEND TEAM IS WORKING
ON.
HEY, SCOTT.
>> Scott: HEY, DARREN.
YEAH, IT'S GAME DAY, SUPER
BOWL LII, AND I SAY THINGS ARE
HEATING UP, BUT IT'S IN
MINNESOTA AND THE TEMPS HAVE
BEEN BELOW FREEZING ALL WEEK.
YOU KNOW, FAN IS SHORT FOR
FANATIC AND COMING UP, WE HAVE A
STORY ON ONE PATRIOTS FANATIC
THAT WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR
THE BIG GAME.
HE'S PREDICTING A WINNER TO THE
NEXT LEVEL.
ALSO, THURSDAY WAS INTERNATIONAL
CREPE DAY AND CREPES WERE
OFFERED FOR THE PUBLIC ALL DAY.
YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED A CHANGE IN
THE FLAVOR WITH THE CHOCOLATE
CREPES AND WE'LL TELL YOU WHY
THE RESTAURANT IS NO LONGER
USING NUT TELL.
>> Lance:.
PLUS, IT'S BEEN A COLD WEEKEND
AND WE MAY BE SEEING SNOW
THROUGHOUT OUR SUNDAY.
DAVE TELLS US WHAT TO EXPECT ALL
AT THE TOP OF THE HOUR.
>> Darren: THANK YOU, SCOTT.
THE PRESIDENT'S FIRST STATE OF
THE UNION ADDRESS CALLED FOR
UNITY AS HE LAID OUT HIS PLANS
FOR THE COMING YEARS, BUT AS
HANNAH REPORTS, NOT EVERYONE IS
FEELING UNIFIED.
>> Pres. Trump: THAT THE STATE
OF OUR UNION IS STRONG BECAUSE
OUR PEOPLE ARE STRONG.
[ APPLAUSE ]
>> Reporter: PRESIDENT TRUMP IN
HIS FIRST STATE OF THE UNION
ADDRESS TOUTED ALL OF THE AREAS
HE SEES AS SUCCESSES SINCE
INAUGURATION DAY, JOB CREATION,
STOCK MARKET GAINS, TAX CUTS.
THE HOT BUTTON ISSUE, THOUGH,
THAT COULD BRING THE GOVERNMENT
TOWARDS THE BRINK OF ANOTHER
SHUTDOWN IN ABOUT A WEEK,
IMMIGRATION.
>> Pres. Trump: TONIGHT, I AM
EXTENDING AN OPEN HAND TO WORK
WITH MEMBERS OF BOTH PARTIES.
>> Reporter: AS EXPECTED,
MR. TRUMP CALLED FOR THE
CONSTRUCT OF A SOUTHERN BORDER
WALL, AN END TO VISA LOTTERIES
AND FAMILY-BASED IMMIGRATION.
IN EXCHANGE, HE OFFERED A PATH
TO CITIZENSHIP FOR 1.8 MILLION
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS BROUGHT HERE
AS CHILDREN.
>> Pres. Trump: UNDER OUR PLAN,
THOSE WHO MEET EDUCATION AND
WORK REQUIREMENTS AND SHOW GOOD
MORAL CHARACTER WILL BE ABLE TO
BECOME FULL CITIZENS OF THE
UNITED STATES.
>> Reporter: IN THEIR OFFICIAL
RESPONSE, DEMOCRATS THROUGH
MASSACHUSETTS REPRESENTATIVE JOE
KENNEDY III TOLD DACA DREAMERS,
QUOTE, WE WILL FIGHT FOR YOU.
HE THEN WENT AFTER THE
DIVISIVENESS OF THE TRUMP
ADMINISTRATION'S FIRST YEAR.
>> BULLIES MAY LAND A PUNCH,
THEY MAY LEAVE A MARK, BUT THEY
HAVE NEVER, NOT ONCE IN THE
HISTORY OF OUR UNITED STATES,
MANAGED TO MEET THE STRENGTH AND
SPIRIT OF A PEOPLE UNITED IN
DEFENSE OF THEIR FUTURE.
>> Reporter: PRESIDENT TRUMP
CALLED FOR $1.5 TRILLION
INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING PLAN,
THOUGH HE DID NOT TALK MUCH OF
WHERE THAT MONEY WOULD COME
FROM.
>> Darren: REACTION TO THE
PRESIDENT'S SPEECH WAS SWIFT.
HERE IS ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY
WITH WHAT OUR LOCAL LEADERS ARE
SAYING.
>> Reporter: LAWMAKERS FROM OUR
REGION TOOK TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO
VOICE THEIR OPINIONS.
DEMOCRATIC ASCERTAIN CHUCK
SCHUMER WENT ON -- SENATOR CHUCK
SCHUMER WENT ON TWITTER SAYING
AMERICANS WERE LOOKING FOR A
UNIFYING VISION TO BUILD THE
COUNTRY, BUT THEY GOT FIRES THAT
STOKED DIVISION.
INDEPENDENT SENATOR BERNIE
SANDERS WENT LIVE ON FACEBOOK
AFTER THE SPEECH.
HE AGREED THE OFFICIAL
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS LOW, BUT HE
SAYS THE PRESIDENT FAILED TO
MENTION POOR JOB CREATION.
>> Sen. Sanders: HIS FIRST YEAR
IN OFFICE MARKED THE LOWEST
LEVEL OF JOB CREATION SINCE
2010.
>> Reporter: SENATOR SANDERS
ALSO SAYS ONLY 2% OF AMERICANS
REPORTED GETTING BONUSES OR
RAISES FROM THE PRESIDENT'S TAX
CUTS.
>> Sen. Sanders: THE RICH
CONTINUE TO GET MUCH RICHER
WHILE MILLIONS OF AMERICAN
WORKERS ARE WORKING TWO OR THREE
JOBS JUST TO KEEP THEIR HEADS
ABOVE WATER.
>> Reporter: REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR
CHRIS SUNUNU TWEETED IN SUPPORT
OF THE PRESIDENT SAYING, QUOTE,
THE PRESIDENT IS RIGHT, TAX
REFORM HAS PROVIDED TREMENDOUS
RELIEF FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS AND
SMALL BUSINESSES.
IN BURLINGTON, ALEXANDER
MONTGOMERY, CHANNEL 3 NEWS.
>> Darren: CHANNEL 3'S EVA
McCANN SAT DOWN WITH AN EXPERT
ON PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS TO
ANALYZE MR. TRUMP'S SPEECH.
HERE'S HER INTERVIEW WITH
MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE POLITICAL
SCIENTIST MATT DICKINSON.
>> Eva: WHAT DID YOU THINK OF
THE SPEECH?
>> Dickinson: I THOUGHT TWO
ASPECTS OF IT STOOD OUT TO ME.
THE FIRST WAS HIS EFFORTS TO
PAINT A VERY OPTIMISTIC PICTURE
OF THE FUTURE OF THE COUNTRY AND
IT'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS UNDER HIS
STEWARDSHIP, FOCUSING IN
PARTICULAR ON THE ECONOMY, BUT
TAPET, THERE IS A DARK -- AT THE
SAME TIME, THERE IS A DARK
UNDERCURRENT IN HIS TONE.
A LOT OF SUCCESSES WERE PAIRED
WITH OVERCOMING OBSTACLES AND
YOU SAW THIS IN PARTICULAR WHEN
HE TALKED ABOUT IMMIGRATION.
HE TALKED ABOUT IMMIGRATION NOT
IN TERMS OF WHAT INCOMING
IMMIGRANTS BRING TO THE COUNTRY,
STRENGTHENING THE FIBER OF THE
COMMUNITY, BUT MORE ABOUT WHO WE
SHOULD KEEP OUT.
THAT WAS SORT OF A DARK SIDE.
AND THE SECOND THING THAT I
THOUGHT STOOD OUT AND REINFORCED
THAT FIRST POINT WAS HIS GUESTS.
HE HAD A NUMBER OF GUESTS THAT
HE BROUGHT IN.
THIS IS PRETTY TYPICAL FOR STATE
OF THE UNION ADDRESSES, BUT WHAT
WAS INTERESTING IS A LOT OF
GUESTS WERE THERE BECAUSE THEY
HAD OVERCOME TRAGEDIES, THEY HAD
ESCAPED FROM NORTH KOREA OR
THEIR CHILDREN HAD BEEN KILLED
BY GANGS AND --
>> Eva: LET'S TALK ABOUT THEM.
THE FAMILIES BROUGHT IN WHOSE
CHILDREN DIED AT THE HANDS OF
UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND THE
MS-13 GANG.
DO YOU THINK THAT RESONATED,
DOING THAT, THAT THAT SORT OF
WON HIM POINTS WHEN IT COMES TO
THE IMMIGRATION DEBATE?
>> Dickinson: I DON'T THINK SO.
I THINK THE WAY HE'S GOING TO
GET IMMIGRATION THROUGH,
COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION,
SOMETHING THAT GOES BEYOND DACA
AND ACTUALLY PROVIDES A
COMPREHENSIVE FRAMEWORK FOR
IMMIGRATION, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO
DO THAT BY SCARING PEOPLE AND
PARTICULARLY DEMOCRATS.
YOU WANT TO BRING DEMOCRATS TO
THE TABLE BY UNDERSTANDING WHAT
IMMIGRATION DOES IN TERMS OF
STRENGTHENING SOCIETY.
THAT'S WHAT DEMOCRATS BELIEVE,
AND YOU HAVE TO PLAY THAT UP
MORE THAN I THINK WHAT THIS
TENDENCY TO FOCUS ON THE BAD
IMMIGRANTS DID.
>> Eva: WHAT ABOUT THE ECONOMY?
WILL HE GET CREDIT FOR WHERE THE
ECONOMY IS TODAY?
>> Dickinson: FOR BETTER OR
WORSE, PRESIDENTS TEND TO GET
REWARDED OR PUNISHED FOR THE
ECONOMY DEPENDING ON HOW IT DOES
BECAUSE THEY ARE VIEWED AS OUR
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE
ECONOMY.
SO HE CLEARLY MADE AN EFFORT TO
MAKE THAT ISSUE MORE SALIENT,
AND ONE REASON, OF COURSE,
HEADING INTO THE 2018 ELECTIONS,
WE KNOW HISTORICALLY SITTING
PRESIDENT'S PARTIES DO NOT DO
WELL, SO HE'S TRYING TO HYPE THE
ECONOMY AND MAKE THAT THE MOST
IMPORTANT CRITERIA BY WHICH
PEOPLE CAST THEIR VOTE IN 2018.
I TELL YOU, HE WAS FAIRLY
SUCCESSFUL AT THAT LAST NIGHT,
BUT WE'LL HAVE TO SEE IN THE
LONG-TERM WHETHER THAT LAYS OFF
AT THE BALLOT BOX.
>> Eva: WE'RE LEARNING FROM CBS
POLLING THAT HE GOT HIGH MARKS
FOR HIS ADDRESS.
WHAT SHOULD WE TAKE FROM THAT?
ARE MOST AMERICANS SORT OF ON
BOARD WITH HIS MESSAGE?
>> Dickinson: NOT NECESSARILY
THE MESSAGE.
ONE THING WE HAVE TO KEEP IN
MIND IS WHEN WE LOOK AT SURVEY
RESULTS AND THOSE WHO WATCH THE
STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS,
THAT'S A SELF-SELECTED AUDIENCE.
NOT EVERYBODY WATCHED IT.
WE KNOW FOR INSTANCE THE CBS
POLL THAT SHOWED 75% APPROVAL
WERE ONLY 25% DEMOCRATS INCLUDED
IN THAT POLL, MUCH LESS A NUMBER
THAN THE NUMBER OF DEMOCRATS IN
THE NATION AS A WHOLE.
>> Eva: IS THAT TYPICAL FOR
STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESSES?
>> Dickinson: IT IS.
WHEN YOU SEE A DEMOCRATIC
PRESIDENT GIVING A STATE OF THE
UNION SPEECH, THE REPUBLICANS
TYPICALLY TUNE IN IN SMALLER
NUMBERS BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT
TO SEE THE SPEECH FROM SOMEBODY
WHO YOU DID NOT VOTE FOR.
THAT'S NOT UNUSUAL.
>> Eva: TELL US ABOUT BERNIE
SANDERS AND HOW HE ADDRESSED THE
NATION BECAUSE HE DID HIS OWN
ADDRESS FOLLOWING PRESIDENT
TRUMP.
WHAT DID HE HAVE TO SAY?
>> Dickinson: WELL, YOU WOULDN'T
BE SURPRISED IF YOU SAW HIS 2016
PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN THAT HE
TALKED ABOUT THE ECONOMY.
HE TALKED ABOUT THE ONE PERCENT.
IT WAS INTERESTING IN THE
CONTEXT OF TRUMP TRYING TO
MAKE -- TAKE CREDIT FOR AN
OPTIMISTIC VIEWPOINT TOWARDS THE
ECONOMY, SANDERS TRIED TO TURN
THAT UPSIDE DOWN AND SAY THE
ECONOMIC GROWTH IS SKEWED
TOWARDS THE ONE PERCENT, IT'S
NOT RESONATING WITH THE LOWER
WAGE INCOME EARNERS, SO IT WAS
IN MANY RESPECTS A STANDARD
SANDERS STUMP SPEECH.
>> Eva: WHY DID SANDERS THINK IT
WAS IMPORTANT TO OFFER THIS
REBUTTAL?
>> Dickinson: THAT'S A GREAT
QUESTION BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW,
THE DEMOCRATS HAD THEIR OFFICIAL
STANDARD BEARER IN JOSEPH
KENNEDY, AND YET BERNIE THOUGHT
IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT HIS VOICE
BE HEARD.
ONE ANSWER IS HE'S NOT A
DEMOCRAT, HE'S AN INDEPENDENT,
SO WHY NOT.
HE'S SPEAKING FOR INDEPENDENTS,
ALTHOUGH AS YOU KNOW, HE RAN FOR
THE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION AS A
DEMOCRAT, BUT ALSO, I THINK HE
WANTS TO KEEP HIS NAME OUT
THERE, BOTH AS A POTENTIAL
CANDIDATE IN 2020, BUT ALSO AS
THE LEADER OF A MOVEMENT, THE
PROGRESSIVE WING OF THE
DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THIS IS THE
BEST WAY TO DO IT.
>> Eva: WHAT SUBSTANTIVE POINT
WE TAKE FROM THE PRESIDENT'S
ADDRESS?
>> Dickinson: WELL, HE CLEARLY
WANTS TO KEY ON THE ECONOMY AS
A -- BOTH A POINT OF SUCCESS IN
HIS FIRST TERM, BUT ALSO
POINTING AHEAD TO THE MID TERMS.
BUT IMMIGRATION, INTERESTINGLY
ENOUGH, HE EXTENDED A BIT OF AN
OLIVE BRANCH TO DEMOCRATS ON
IMMIGRATION.
HIS DISCUSSION AND WHIMMINGNESS
TO EXPAND PROTECTION --
WILLINGNESS TO EXPAND PROTECTION
FOR THE SO-CALLED DREAMERS, NOT
ONLY THOSE ENROLLED IN THE
PROGRAM, BUT THOSE WHO ARE
ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL, THAT GOES A
LONG WAY TOWARDS MEETING
DEMOCRATS' CONCERNS.
NOW, THE INITIAL RESPONSE OF THE
DEMOCRATS WASN'T OVERWHELMINGLY
POSITIVE, BUT THERE IS THE
POTENTIAL FOR BIPARTISAN ACTION
THERE.
AGAIN, YOU KNOW, WITH THE REST
OF HIS IMMIGRATION PROPOSALS, IT
WAS NOT WELL RECEIVED BIT
DEMOCRATS AND FOR THAT MATTER,
REPUBLICANS VIEW THE DACA
EXTENSION AS A FORM OF AMNESTY.
THERE'S A LONG WAY TO GO.
>> Eva: HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO
BOTH OFFER HOPE AND STOKE FEARS
AT THE SAME TIME?
>> Dickinson: IT'S POSSIBLE IF
YOU'RE SPEAKING IN PART TO TWO
DIFFERENT AUDIENCES.
ON THE ONE HAND, HE WANTS TO
STOKE THE PASSIONS OF HIS BASE.
HE KNOWS THAT IN THE SPECIAL
ELECTIONS THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE
WHILE HE WAS PRESIDENT,
DEMOCRATS HAVE BEEN VERY
ENTHUSIASTIC.
THEY'VE TURNED OUT IN GREATER
NUMBERS BECAUSE OF THE
RESISTANCE MOVEMENT, SO HE WANTS
TO TRY TO RECIPROCATE THAT, GET
SOME ENTHUSIASM IN HIS BASE.
HE'S ALSO TRYING TO EXPAND HIS
SUPPORT.
HE WANTS TO REACH OUT TO THOSE
POTENTIALLY PERSUADABLE
MODERATES, SO TO A CERTAIN
EXTENT, HE WAS SPEAKING TO BOTH
AUDIENCES AND THAT'S WHY THERE
WAS A TENSION IN HIS MESSAGE.
>> Eva: WHERE DO DEMOCRATS GO
FROM HERE?
WERE THEY SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR
REBUTTAL LAST NIGHT?
>> Dickinson: WELL, JOE KENNEDY,
THE OFFICIAL STANDARD BEARER,
STUCK TO DEMOCRATIC THEMES ABOUT
THE WORKING CLASS, THE NEED TO
UNIFY AND PUSHING BACK AGAINST
TRUMP'S OVERLY ROSY ECONOMIC
PERSPECTIVE BY ECHOING THAT THE
ECONOMIC RECOVERY IS NOT
TRICKLING DOWN.
BUT THE INTERESTING PART WAS HE
RIDE TO PUSH BACK AGAINST THE
DARK UNDERTONES OF TRUMP'S
SPEECH BY TALKING ABOUT WHAT
UNITES US AS AMERICANS AND I
THINK DEMOCRATS WILL RUN ON
THAT.
>> Eva: HAVE WE EVER BEEN THIS
POLARIZED IN THE COUNTRY?
THERE WERE SEVERAL LAWMAKERS WHO
DIDN'T EVEN ATTEND THE STATE OF
THE UNION ADDRESS.
OPPOSITION EVENTS WERE HELD AT
THE SAME TIME.
HAS IT EVER BEEN THIS DIVIDED?
>> Dickinson: IN MY MEMORY, I
HAVEN'T SEEN THAT TYPE OF
REACTION WITH SOME MEMBERS OF
CONGRESS NOT ATTENDING.
OTHERS STORMING OUT RIGHT AT THE
CONCLUSION OF THE SPEECH.
IF YOU WATCH THEIR FACES DURING
THE SPEECH, THEY SAT ON THEIR
HANDS.
EVEN AT OBVIOUS OPPORTUNITIES TO
APPLAUD, THEY DIDN'T TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF THAT AND IT'S
SYMPTOMATIC OF A PROBLEM, A
REALITY HERE, WHICH IS CONGRESS
IS AS POLARIZED A PARTISAN BASIS
THAT WE HAVE SEASON IN OVER 150
YEARS, NOT SINCE THE POST CIVIL
WAR ERA.
>> Eva: CERTAINLY ON LOWER
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, THE COST OF
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, THAT'S A
UNIVERSAL ISSUE THAT YOU WOULD
THINK DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS
CAN AGREE ON, BUT THERE WAS NO
CLAPPING OF HANDS.
>> Dickinson: NO, VERY LITTLE
RECIPROCITY ACROSS THE AISLE
FROM EITHER PARTY.
A LOT OF THIS WAS DEMOCRATS
SITTING STONILY AND REPUBLICANS
ENTHUSIASTIC IN RAISING THEIR
BANNERS.
>> Eva: PROFESSOR, THANK YOU.
>> Darren: COMING UP NEXT, ARE
YOU READY FOR THE BIG GAME?
A PREVIEW OF SUPER BOWL LII WHEN
WE COME BACK.
>> Darren: IT'S FINALLY HERE,
SUPER SUNDAY.
SUPER BOWL LII KICKS OFF LATER
TODAY IN MINNEAPOLIS WITH THE
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES TAKING ON
THE DEFENDING CHAMPS, NEW
ENGLAND PATRIOTS.
MORE THAN 100 MILLION VIEWERS
ARE EXPECTED TO WATCH THE BIG
GAME.
THE PATS WILL BE GOING FOR THEIR
THIRD CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE LAST
FOUR YEARS, AND THE SIXTH IN THE
BRADY-BELICHICK ERA.
WCAX SPORES DIRECTOR MIKE McCUNE
IS HERE WITH A PREVIEW OF THE
BIG GAME.
>> Mike: DARREN, HOW YOU DOING?
>> Darren: GOOD, GOOD MORNING.
>> Mike: GOOD MORNING TO YOU.
IT'S GOING TO BE AN EXCITING
NIGHT.
I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE PRETTY
MUCH IN OUR AREA WILL HAVE THEIR
EYES GLUED.
>> Darren: LET'S START WITH
GRONK.
BIG NEWS THIS PAST WEEK, THE
PATRIOTS TIGHT END ROB
GRONKOWSKI WILL PLAY IN THE
SUPER BOWL.
HOW BIG OF A FACTOR IS HIS
RETURN TO THE PATS?
>> Mike: IT'S VERY BIG.
THE PATRIOTS HAVE SHOWN WE CAN
WIN WITHOUT HIM, THEY'VE DONE IT
BEFORE, BUT HE'S THE SINGLE MOST
UNCOVERABLE PLAYER IN THE NFL.
HE'S TOO FAST FOR LINEBACKERS TO
COVER HIM, TOO BIG FOR DEFENSIVE
BACKS TO COVER HIM.
HE IS THE PATRIOTS LEADING
RECEIVER IN RECEPTIONS, IN
RECEIVING YARDS, IN TOUCHDOWNS.
YOU KNOW, HE IS THAT ULTIMATE
WEAPON.
THAT SAID, YOU KNOW, HE WAS
KNOCKED OUT OF THE GAME, AGAIN,
THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LATE
IN THE FIRST HALF.
THE PATRIOTS WERE TRAILING AND
THEY STILL ENDED UP WINNING THE
GAME WITHOUT HIM, SO THEY HAVE
SHOWN THEY ARE CAPABLE OF
WINNING OUT HIM, BUT WHEN HE'S
IN THERE, HE DRAWS SO MUCH
ATTENTION AND THERE'S SO MANY
CHALLENGES FOR A DEFENSE TO TRY
TO FOCUS ON HIM, THAT IT CREATES
MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE OTHER
PATRIOT PLAYERS BECAUSE THE
DEFENSE HAS TO PUT SO MUCH
ATTENTION ON STOPPING HIM.
SO IF HE'S AVAILABLE TO PLAY AND
BY ALL ACCOUNTS, I MEAN, THE WAY
HE'S BEEN ACTING THIS WEEK AND
HE SAID HE'S READY TO ROLL AND
HE SHOULD BE A FACTOR AND A BIG
FACTOR IN THIS GAME.
>> Darren: RECOVERED FROM THAT
CONCUSSION.
WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO THE PATS
WINNING TONIGHT?
>> Mike: TOM BRADY FIRST AND
FOREMOST.
EVEN THOUGH HE'S IN CLASSIC KIND
OF PATRIOTS MODE, WHENEVER HE'S
BEEN WITH THE MEDIA THIS WEEK,
HE'S STILL WORN A GLOVE ON HIS
RIGHT HAND, BUT HIS RIGHT HAND
IS FINE.
OBVIOUSLY IT WAS WELL ENOUGH --
>> Darren: HANDGATE.
>> Mike: HANDGATE.
OBVIOUSLY HE WAS WELL ENOUGH TO
BEAT JACKSONVILLE IN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AND HE HAD THE
SWITCHES TAKEN OUT THIS WEEK OR
LAST WEEK, ACTUALLY, SO HE'LL BE
FINE.
THERE'S NO TEAM IN THE NFL
THAT'S MORE PREPARED FOR EVERY
SCENARIO THAN THE NEW ENGLAND
PATRIOTS AND ON TOP OF THAT, YOU
HAVE THE BEST QUARTERBACK OF ALL
TIME.
SO I MEAN SOMETIMES, YOU KNOW,
HE'S -- HE'S ARGUABLY THE BEST
QUARTERBACK.
BILL BELICHICK IS ARGUABLY THE
BEST HEAD COACH IN NFL HISTORY
AND PATRIOTS HAVE BOTH OF THEM.
SO BELICHICK IS GOING TO HAVE
THEM PREPARE FOR EVERY
CONTINGENCY AND ON TOP OF THAT,
YOU HAVE BRADY THERE WHEN THE
MOMENT IS NEEDED AND STEPPING UP
WHEN THE MOMENT IS CALLED ON.
>> Darren: SO THE EAGLES GOING
INTO THIS AS THE UNDERDOGS, WHAT
WOULD IT TAKE FOR THEM TO PULL
OFF THE UPSET?
>> Mike: THE ONE THING THAT YOU
ALWAYS -- THE RECIPE, IF THERE
IS A RECIPE TO BEATING THE
PATRIOTS IS PUTTING PRESSURE ON
BRADY WITH YOUR DEFENSIVE LINE
SO THAT -- AND JUST YOUR
DEFENSIVE LINE SO THAT YOU CAN
PUT AS MANY PEOPLE IN COVERAGE
AS POSSIBLE DEFENSIVELY.
THAT'S HOW THE NEW YORK GIANTS
PUT THE PRESSURE ON HIM IN THE
TWO SUPER BOWL WINS.
BALTIMORE HAS BEEN ABLE TO DO
THAT A COUPLE TIMES IN THE
PLAYOFF, DENVER HAS BEEN ABLE TO
DO THAT A COUPLE OF TIMES IN THE
PLAYOFFS AND BE ABLE TO BEAT THE
PATRIOTS.
JACKSONVILLE DID IT FOR ABOUT
THREE QUARTERS IN THE AFC
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME BEFORE THEY
RAN OUT OF GAS.
PHILADELPHIA HAS THE DEFENSIVE
LINE THAT THEY CAN DO THAT, SO
DEFENSIVELY, THEY MIGHT BE ABLE
TO DO SOMETHING.
THE QUESTION IS ON OFFENSE, CAN
THEY SCORE ENOUGH WITH NICK
FOLLS, THE BACKUP QUARTERBACK,
CARSON WENTZ WAS THE QUARTERBACK
THROUGHOUT THE SEASON AND GOT
HURT LATE IN THE SEASON, BUT
THEY HAVE A BACKUP AND THAT'S
THE QUESTION, COUNTY EAGLES
OFFENSE DO ENOUGH?
THAT I'M GOING TO PUT YOU ON THE
SPOT.
WHAT'S YOUR PREDICTION?
>> Mike: IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE
CLOSE, BUT IN THE END, BRADY
GETS THE BALL AND I SAY THE
PATRIOTS WIN IT 27-24.
>> Darren: I'M GOING TO DO 24-21
PATS.
WE'LL SEE YOU SOON.
THANKS FOR WATCHING.
ENJOY THE GAME AND WE'LL SEE YOU
SOON, EVERYBODY.
