High School Nordic Ski Championships - Day 1

CRAFTSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) The Mt. Mansfield Cougars eye a sweep of the D-I boys and girls Nordic Ski Championships, with the Middlebury Tigers leading the D-II boys and U-32 on top in D-II girls after day one of competition.

The Cougars took both 4x2.5K relays at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center to seize their leads.

Middlebury's D-2 boys lead was built on the back of Sam Hodges. The senior won the boys 5K freestyle and led the relay team to a win as well. Tom Hussey was third in the individual race and also a member of the relay team.

Hodges' sister Malia also took an individual title in the girls 5K freestyle. The Tigers are second behind U-32, which won the D-2 girls relay.

Callie Young of North Country and Brattleboro's Isaac Freitas-Egan were the overall and D-1 winners in the individual race. Freitas-Egan's Colonels sit in second place behind MMU.

The championships conclude Monday at Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton with the classical competition.
