Mt. Anthony Wins 30th Straight Wrestling Title

BRANDON, Vt. (WCAX) Wrestling Championships in 14 weight classes were up for grabs under the spotlight in Brandon Saturday.

At 220 pounds, Milton's Nick Johnson completed his undefeated season. He got the early pin on Colin Crowley to bring home the title.

Another undefeated wrestler, Saint-J's Hunter Verge, won at 113, pinning Lucas Saunders. Verge was the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The Essex Hornets put four wrestlers in the winner's circle. At 170 pounds, Jack Carney picked up two points in the final seconds to top Colby Giroux 9-7.

Meanwhile, Noah Bonning won at 120 pounds, as he escaped Josh Hanlan's hold and turned it into a pinfall. Essex finished 2nd overall with 168 points.

But once again, the Mount Anthony Patriots are kings of the mat. At 285 pounds, Calvin Hayford got the takedown in extra time to top Hunter Ladd.

Fellow senior Tyler Burgess won at 152 pounds, out-pointing Justin Bissonette 3-0.

Seven Patriots won individual titles, and their 274.5 team points earned them a 30th-straight state championship.
