BURLINGTON, Vt. -- St. Johnsbury's Lia Rotti and Connor Lambert of South Burlington claimed the individual titles at the 43rd Vermont state decathlon championships Tuesday at the University of Vermont.
Lambert, a senior, edged Mount Mansfield's Tyler Muttilainen by just six points to win the men's title. Lambert, who earned victories in the long jump and javelin, held a lead of just over 150 points over Muttilainen heading into the final event, the 1500. The MMU senior finished eighth overall, while Lambert fought to a 33rd place finish to hold on to his narrow victory, posting a total of 5,710 points.
On the women's side, Rotti, a junior, topped her teammate, senior Hannah Wescott, by 279 points. Rotti, who won the javelin and long jump, finished second behind Wescott in the pole vault and hurdles and added third place finishes in 100 and 400 dash and discus, scored a total of 5,551 points to break the previous meet record set last season by her St. J teammate Katherine Cowan. Wescott's runner-up total of 5,272 points also topped Cowan's previous top mark.
The St. Johnsbury girls and Mount Mansfield boys claimed the team titles, while, in a separate competition, Hannah Giesing of Oxbow won the women's steeplechase and Lucas Calcagni of South Burlington claimed the men's steeplechase.
