St. J boys, MMU girls win H.S. alpine championships

Tuesday, March 6th

E. BURKE, Vt. -- The St. Johnsbury boys and Mount Mansfield girls earned high school alpine state championships on the second day of competition Tuesday at Burke Mountain.

Coming off the giant slalom Monday, Tuesday it was the slalom.

The girls race was almost a mirror image of Monday. In the GS, CVU's Becca Provost led after the first run only to see MMU's Viva Goetze storm back in the second run to edge Provost by .22 seconds for the individual title.

On Tuesday, Provost sat in third after run one, but uncorked a second run nearly two seconds faster than anyone else to earn the win. Ella and Viva Goetze placed second and third and teammate Sadie Firman was tenth as Mount Mansfield won the team title, it's first since 2014. CVU, Burr & Burton, Rutland and Rice round out the top five.

In the boys slalom, after watching his younger brother Dylan win the GS Monday, Rutland's Austin Rousell posted the fastest times of both runs to win the slalom by over three seconds. Dylan finished fourth. Hugo Hong of St. Johnsbury was second, CVU's Briggs Francis third.

Hong's St. J teammate Rian Fried and after the Hilltoppers finished fifth, seventh and eighth in the GS those results were enough to give St. Johnsbury a five point victory over CVU in the team competition, with Woodstock, Rutland and Burr & Burton following. It's the first boys alpine state title for St. Johnsbury.
