ESSEX JCT., Vt. --- The next generation of Winter Olympians may be on display this weekend in Essex Junction. USA Luge is bringing it's Slider Search to the Champlain Valley Expo this weekend. The Slider Search is an annual grass-roots recruitment program to introduce youth to the sport of luge and identify the next generation of USA Luge team members and Olympians.
The series of clinics is open to boys and girls ages nine through 13, and provides an introduction to luge using wheeled sleds and coaching from National and Olympic team athletes. Top participants from the nationwide tour will be considered for the USA Luge Junior Development team and will be invited to an additional training program in Lake Placid on an actual luge run this winter.
At the Slider Search participants are taught the basics of riding a luge sled at controlled speeds, including positioning, steering and stopping. Once these skills are developed, athletes take several runs down a paved luge course on wheel-equipped luge sleds and test skills through a battery of fitness tests. USA Luge ran a pair of clinics today at the Expo, and will run two more tomorrow, the first from 9am-12pm and the second from 2pm - 5pm.
If you'd like to take part in either of Sunday's clinics, registration is free...go to TEAMUSA.ORG...click on Luge in the Winter Sports column and click on Slider Search. .
