Burlington, Vermont - May 5, 2009
Vandals struck a gay community center in Burlington over the weekend. The R-U-1-2 center hung a banner several weeks ago to celebrate the passage of the gay marriage bill. Sometime between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon someone spray painted a slur on the bottom of the banner. This isn't the first time vandals have hit the center.
"You know we thought, here we go. You know this isn't the first time unfortunately that something like this has happened," said Ann Atkins of the RU12? Community Center. "So you know it was really disconcerting that someone would take the time - they tagged the building as well but that's been washed off by the maintenance people, so you know it's just those cowardly sorts of acts that are really disheartening."
RU12 plans to hang another banner in response to the vandals.
