Graniteville, Vermont - May 5, 2009
One of Vermont's best-known quarries is hitting the silver screen this week.
The E.L. Smith Quarry, in Graniteville, will make a digitally enhanced cameo appearance in the newest 'Star Trek' movie. The movie makers needed a sheer cliff to add drama to an exciting car chase featuring a young Captain Kirk driving a red convertible. But Rock of Ages officials, which owns the quarry, say they didn't know what the film was when movie makers came last May to take video and still photos of the quarry. The film's actors were digitally inserted later. So if you make the trek to your local theater to see the film, be sure to pay extra attention to that chase scene... and the credits at the end, where the quarry gets a shout-out.
