Rutland, Vermont - May 20, 2009
Rutland City will pay a sizable settlement to a local man who sued the city after police used a Taser gun on him while he was handcuffed.
Twenty-year-old George Griffin Jr.'s lawyer posted video of the 2007 arrest on the Web site YouTube. Griffin was arrested for trying to fight people on Center Street, but after he was put into the front seat of the cruiser, Officer Ed Dumas tased Griffin, claiming he refused to put on a seat belt. Griffin sued, saying the Taser was excessive force. On Monday, the city's Aldermen voted to pay Griffin a $10,000 settlement, which will be paid for by the city's insurance.
