Trekking the U.S. With No Car

Boaz Frankel Boaz Frankel

Colchester, Vermont - June 8, 2009

A man from Portland, Ore., trekked through Vermont Monday on his mission to travel across the country without using a car.

Boaz Frankel is on what he calls an "un-road-trip." He's traveling by bicycle, train, surfboard, ferry, or horse-- whatever mode of transportation he discovers along the way. Frankel has two goals: to demonstrate the possibilities of reducing dependence on cars, and to experience our colorful nation through back roads that people don't see if they stick just to the highway.

"Every day I'm getting feedback from people on places I should visit or routes I should take on my bike. I'm biking through New Hampshire and they say, 'Oh, you should take this route instead!' So it's fun to have that instant feedback," Frankel said.

Frankel is getting help on his un-road trip from volunteers he meets online.
