Burlington, Vermont - June 12, 2009

A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after he nearly drowned.

The boy was swimming in the pool at the Burlington Boys & Girls Club. Police say there were 15 other kids in the pool and four lifeguards on duty. Police say a lifeguard noticed the boy was floating on his stomach and appeared unconscious. Lifeguards pulled the boy out and administered CPR until EMT crews arrived, took over and rushed the child to Fletcher Allen Health Care.

"The only thing I can say is currently the doctors are with him and I'll use the word again, optimistic, but they're doing all they can for him at this time and that's the way we'll remain: as optimistic until we hear otherwise," Burlington Police Lt. Bruce Bovat said.

Police say it's unclear how the boy got in trouble. They are withholding his identity for now. Children at the club told us the boy is a fourth-grader at the H.O. Wheeler School.

Police say his parents were notified and are at the hospital with him.
