Cuomo: 30 state workers claimed unemployment

Associated Press - June 15, 2009 1:05 PM ET

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Thirty current and former state employees from across New York are being accused of collecting unemployment benefits while on the state payroll.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo claims the defendants stole thousands of dollars from the state by falsely certifying that they were qualified for unemployment insurance benefits through the Department of Labor's electronic certification process. The labor department routinely cross-checks state employees against people receiving unemployment benefits

Charges brought against the 30 defendants over the past week include grand larceny, falsifying business records and petit larceny.

The defendants include eight people from the Albany area. Other arrests were made in New York City, Long Island and Dutchess, Rockland and Westchester counties.
