Brattleboro, Vermont - July 6, 2009

A new wing at the Brattleboro retreat will open on Tuesday.

The psychiatric hospital will be the first in New England to have a wing exclusively for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. The unit includes 16 beds. Clients will receive the same psychiatric care offered in the rest of the hospital, but doctors and staff will be specially trained to deal with the LGBT community. The retreat is also planning to start a program specifically to help police and firefighters.
