AG sues Manhattan eatery over workers' pay

Associated Press - July 13, 2009 3:35 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says a popular Thai restaurant in Manhattan's financial district underpaid employees by hundreds of thousands of dollars, with some working up 72 hours a week for less than minimum wage.

Cuomo's office filed a lawsuit Monday against Liberty Thai Corp., which runs the Lemongrass Grill, and company owner Hann Low.

The telephone rang unanswered at Liberty Thai, and there was no immediate response to a fax sent to a possible telephone number for the owner. It wasn't immediately clear whether he or the company had a lawyer.

The suit says delivery workers made as little as $2.08 per hour, and some kitchen workers made as little as $4.23 per hour - below minimum wage, even when reduced by an allowance for tips.

The lawsuit seeks more than $962,000 in restitution and damages.
