Vt. Schools raise money for Guard families

Associated Press - October 27, 2009 3:55 PM ET

CAVENDISH, Vt. (AP) - Vermont school children are stepping in to help the families of Vermont National Guard soldiers who are deploying to Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Deb Markowitz kicked off the "Service-to-Service" project on Tuesday at the Cavendish Town Elementary School, where third through fifth grade students raised $1,400 in an all-night fundraising effort to benefit soldiers and their families.

Markowitz, a Democratic candidate for governor, says the deployment will affect every community in Vermont and provides an opportunity for services learning for kids.

She says other schools are planning concerts and putting together Thanksgiving care packages and offering baby-sitting, wood stacking and shoveling services to Guard families.
