Montpelier, Vermont - October 28, 2009
Violence is escalating there, just as Vermont National Guardsmen are preparing for a one-year-deployment.
October has become the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the Afghan war. Roadside bombs claimed eight more American lives yesterday, for a total of 55 U.S. deaths this month. The president is still reviewing strategy options, including whether to send an additional 40,000 troops to the region.
The National Guard will hold an official deployment ceremony on Friday for an advanced party of 35. They'll join the rest of the troops for training in Louisiana, but they will not be returning home before shipping out to Afghanistan.
We will have live coverage of the ceremony Friday morning at 8:00.
Hal Kearsley, a political science professor at Norwich University, and an expert in international relations, talked to us about what Vermont soldiers may face in the war torn country.
