Unemployent benefits running out for some in NH

Associated Press - October 31, 2009 8:35 AM ET

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Unemployment benefits are running out for about 500 New Hampshire residents, and that number will increase each week unless Washington approves an extension.

Saturday marks the end of extended benefits for 500 residents. WMUR-TV reports each week after that, up to 200 people will no longer get checks - that means up to 1,600 people with no assistance by the end of this year.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said the Senate will vote Monday on a 14-week extension for anyone who would lose benefits before the end of the year. States where unemployment rates are higher than 8.5 percent will get an additional six weeks.

New Hampshire's Employment Security Office said if Congress does not extend benefits again, as many as 10,000 residents could be without benefits in March.
