Hudson Valley touted for National Park system

Associated Press - November 2, 2009 1:55 PM ET

KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - Rep. Maurice Hinchey wants the Hudson River Valley to become part of the National Park system.

The Hudson Valley Democrat has introduced legislation that would authorize the National Park Service to study whether the area could benefit from the designation. The service would then make recommendations to Congress.

Hinchey says Monday the designation would make the region eligible for more federal resources for conservation, historic preservation, tourism and economic development.

Hinchey's bill says that any future designation must respect the rights of private land owners. He points to the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area as a potential model.
