NYC cries 'fraud' in suit over ferry crash

Associated Press - November 4, 2009 6:25 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - A man who claimed he was injured in a deadly Staten Island Ferry accident lost a lawsuit this week after lawyers for New York City accused him of lying about being on the boat.

The city says George Adde, of the Bronx, told conflicting stories about his activities the day of the wreck of the Andrew J. Barberi in 2003.

During one deposition, he said he walked to Manhattan's Battery Park after the crash - an impossibility since the accident happened at a terminal on Staten Island.

A federal judge in Brooklyn ruled in the city's favor late Monday night after a 2-day trial. He called Adde "less than credible."

Adde's lawyer, Jason Paris, says he is "100 percent certain" his client was on the boat, and called the court decision" a travesty."
