Newport, Vermont - November 7, 2009
There's a big party brewing in the Northeast Kingdom.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first time the late Senator George Aiken used the term to described Vermont's rural northeast corner. The name stuck, and the Kingdom has become synonymous with Vermont's scenic beauty and rural culture.
To commemorate the anniversary, a celebration is scheduled for next Saturday in Newport.
"Other people used it, it didn't get very far but when such a beloved Vermont Governor turned U-S Senator used that expression -- 60 years later, it still lives with us," said Scott Wheeler, one of many party planner.
The Kingdom party will be held on Saturday, November 14th at the Goodrich Memorial Library on Main Street in Newport.
