Burlington Council votes to release telecom docs

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 8:25 AM ET

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Burlington City Council wants to make public exchanges between city attorneys and the administration of Mayor Bob Kiss about a $17 million city loan to Burlington Telecom.

The city council unanimously passed a resolution at its Monday meeting to release the documents, generated between Aug. 1, 2008 and May 31.

City attorney Ken Schatz says the documents cannot be released until Kiss signs the resolution.

The documents include the notification of Chief Administrative Officer Jonathan Leopold by attorney Bill Ellis that the city had violated Burlington Telecom's license because it required that city money used by the utility be repaid within 60 days.

The Burlington Free Press says attorneys told councilors that city interests wouldn't be harmed by the release of the documents.
