NH committee votes against assisted suicide bill

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 11:05 AM ET

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire House committee has voted against a bill to legalize assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

The Judiciary Committee voted 14-3 Tuesday to recommend rejecting a bill that would let terminally ill patients over age 18 obtain lethal prescriptions, with safeguards to prevent abuses. Opponents called the bill a recipe for elder abuse.

Supporters of assisted suicide who voted to reject the bill said it was poorly drafted. They said it would be better for a new bill to be filed in 2011 than try to fix the bill before them.

The House votes on the recommendation in January.

Oregon has approved assisted suicide ballot questions twice. Washington state followed suit last year.
