Former NYC top cop hoping to be free for holidays

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Former New York police Commissioner Bernard Kerik is hoping to be free for the holidays despite pleading guilty to eight felonies.

A bail hearing has been called for Tuesday afternoon on Kerik's request to be released until he is sentenced in February.

Kerik, who nearly became Homeland Security chief, was free on $500,000 bail until Oct. 20.

Then he was jailed for sharing secret pretrial information with a supporter. The judge said he feared Kerik might taint potential jurors.

Kerik's trial evaporated when he admitted last week that he had lied to the White House and broken tax laws. The judge said he would seriously consider bail.

Kerik's stay at the Westchester County Jail included 10 days in the psychiatric unit.
