Pirates Attempt Second Maersk Alabama Hijacking

Nairobi, Kenya - November 18, 2009

EU officials say Somali pirates have attacked U.S.-flagged cargo ship the Maersk Alabama for the second time.

The attempted hijacking happened this morning off the cost of Africa. Officials say the pirates fired automatic weapons at the ship but guards on board returned fire and ended the attack.

The Maersk Alabama is the same ship captained by Richard Phillips of Underhill. It was hijacked in April, and pirates held Phillips hostage for five days before being rescued by Navy SEALS.

Officials say it's just a coincidence that pirates attacked the Maersk twice since those waters are considered very dangerous.
