Gov. David PatersonAlbany, New York - November 25, 2009
New York Governor David Paterson wants emergency powers from the Legislature, but lawmakers are saying "no."
Paterson asked lawmakers in an internet address on Tuesday, for one-time power to cut $3.2 billion in state spending so New York can pay its bills next month. However, lawmakers rejected the plan, calling it an overuse of power. They're now reportedly calling him "King David." Paterson has been pushing lawmakers to pass his budget plan and called them back for unsuccessful and costly special sessions.
But lawmakers say Paterson's budget will hurt seniors and send property taxes up.
