Pittsford to Repay Taxpayers

Pittsford, Vermont - November 24, 2009

Homeowners in Pittsford are getting a refund after overpaying their property taxes.

A routine audit this summer revealed a $350,000 mistake. Taxpayers were overcharged as the result of a budgeting error by the town. The town manager says this is not the fault of one individual. It went unnoticed by everyone.

"We're a small town, people generally try to work together. I know the approach from the staff all the way up to the select board has been this was a simple mistake. It could happen to anyone. And it's a mistake that all of the people involved with the process accept as partly their responsibility," said Pittsford Town Manager John Haverstock.

Residents will decide on Town Meeting Day how to refund the money to themselves.
