Senior reporter Kristin Carlson accepted a DuPont-Columbia University Award for a series of reports called Foreigners on the Farm.
WCAX is one of only six local stations across the country to receive the prestigious award this year.
For many of our viewers the 2008 series was a first glimpse at the reality of many of the state's dairy farms. And for the first time, farmers and their Mexican workers talked openly about their situation.
"When this story aired no one knew what would happen. Never before in Vermont had a farmer or workers talked so openly, admitting that what they were doing was illegal. The threat of a federal crackdown, deportation was on everyone's minds," said Carlson during her acceptance speech.
