Burlington creates art district

Burlington, Vermont - May 11, 2010

The Burlington City Council approved a plan to establish a "South End Arts District."

The hope is to help artists and organizations better market themselves, not only to bring in more artists, but tourists too. The city council says its one of the few things they can do to help.

"We can't offer them money, we can't offer them tax breaks, as much as we'd like to. There's a cost to doing business here, but one of the things that we can do is give this kind of designation to help them market themselves," said city councilor Joan Shannon.

"The state of Vermont has the forth highest of visual artists in the country. That makes us important, what we're asking you to do tonight, is simply to recognize something that has clearly taken place over time anyway," said Mark Waskow, Chair of South End Art Hop.

Officials at Burlington City Arts say this is not an attempt to shun artists in other parts of the city. They plan to reach out to all artists and return with a citywide plan by August.
