Three killed in St. Jay accident

Saint Johnsbury, Vermont - June 20, 2010

A tragedy in Saint Johnsbury this Father's Day.

State Police say three young people died instantly in a car crash on Severance Road around 1 a.m. It happened as their car was coming around a sharp curve and the driver lost control. "The top of the car came in contact with a tree off the side of the road," said Vermont State Police Sgt. Sean Selby. "Definitely appears speed was a factor, as well as alcohol and lack of seat belts."

Killed in the crash were 21-year-old Adam Hovey of Saint Johnsbury, 19-year-old Amber Riendeau of Concord and 22 year old William McQuade of Concord. Matthew Desrochers of Saint Johnsbury was the one person to survive the crash with only minor injuries. Police say it's because he was wearing a seat belt.

Family and friends of the victims placed memorials at the scene of the accident later on Sunday.

Police do not know who was driving the car yet. They expect more details to come out later in the week.
