ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Just over half of grade school students in New York were proficient in math and English in standardized tests that had to be adjusted to reflect the expectations for college-bound students.
The state Board of Regents reports that 53% of students in grades 3-8 this year scored "proficient" or higher in English while 61% met or exceeded the new proficiency standard in math.
A year ago, before the "cut scores" were raised to a level used in national exams, 77% of New York students scored "proficient" in English and 86% were considered proficient in math.
The new standards, while reducing the number of proficient students, are more closely aligned with the comparative level of competence for high school Regents exams and the demands of college.
