Burlington, Vermont - December 19, 2007
People in Burlington paused Wednesday nigth to recognize the area's homeless population.
A candlelight vigil honored people without a home for the holidays. Advocates read names, ages and stories about some of the people COTS is serving.
The Committee on Temporary Shelter is marking its 25th anniversary serving the homeless this month.
"I hope it will just help increase the awareness of the problem," said Gretchen Bailey of South Burlington. "There's some discussion in the media about it and how much worse it is this year, I'm just hoping it will affect the state government, someday the federal government, to make things better. People need more affordable housing and this sort of thing makes it even more clear, especially when you hear these individual stories."
Next week Kate Duffy reports a series of stories on the causes and impacts of homelessness in Burlington. Those stories will air next Wednesday and Thursday on the Channel 3 News at 6:00.
