Police: Smiley Face Appears to be Prank

Plattsburgh, New York - May 1, 2008

Albany police believe a painting left near the area where Joshua Szostak was last seen is a hoax.

The Plattsburgh State student's body was found in the Hudson River last week. He was last seen four months ago after he left a bar near the Port of Albany.

Two former New York City detectives are investigating the deaths of 40 male college students across the nation. They believe the cases are all linked to a group of serial killers because all the victims, just like Josh, were last seen at a bar and their bodies were found in rivers. And a smiley face was spray-painted near the scene.

A smiley-face was found by Josh's father on a tree near the Port of Albany.

Albany police say the case remains closed, and believe the smiley face is nothing more than a heartless prank.
