Michael Jacques
Montpelier, Vermont - July 9, 2008
Vermont Corrections officials have changed their story and admitted they actually SUPPORTED early probation release for the man accused of kidnapping Brooke Bennett.
Federal authorities have charged Michael Jacques with kidnapping his niece Brooke Bennett, 12.
In 2006, Jacques was released seven years early from probation for raping and kidnapping a teenager in Rutland in 1992.
In 2004, Judge Amy Davenport okayed the early release over the strong opposition of prosecutors.
Last week, Corrections officials insisted they also opposed the early release.
However, today the Governor's office said that Corrections made a mistake. A double check of records shows the department actually urged the judge to okay the early release for Jacques.
