Winooski is moving into the post-Josh Handverger era with the selection of an interim city manager on Tuesday night.

The city council announced that George Cross has accepted the job. Cross is a former Winooski School Superintendent and a former state lawmaker, a background the council says makes him ideal for the job.

"He's got experience in budgeting and whatnot, so we felt it was a good position for him," said Winooski Mayor Michael O'Brien. "And I think the staff is ready to have someone -- a leader. And I think the community will embrace George as well."

"I haven't predetermined anything," Cross said. "I know that the people who work at City Hall are good people. I know the city councilors are good people. I know that Winooski is a good city. We'll work this out, whatever the issues are, we'll get them worked out."

Cross has agreed to stay in the position for eight months while the council searches for a permanent replacement.
