Exercise Benefits Mind and Body

A new study shows exercise has benefits for both body and mind.

Researchers at the University of Vermont asked college students how their moods were several hours after working out. They learned people who exercised were less tense and angry. It's not new that physical activity has been shown to improve your mood.

But this study found a good mood can actually last up to twelve hours after a light workout.

"That's a key point for me is it doesn't have to be a terribly difficult exercise session that a lot of people think. They can get these positive benefits through walking, for some people, gardening. Dancing, riding a bike, it's really something you can tailor to your lifestyle and doesn't have to be something elite athletes do," said Jeremy Sibold of the UVM Rehabilitation & Movement Science Department.

The study showed people prone to stress or depression may see particularly positive benefits.
