Vermont Hooters Calls it Quits

South Burlington, Vermont -- July 5, 2009

Hooters, the franchise that made a splash when it opened its first restaurant located in Vermont, is closing. The news came quickly and without explanation.

A small group of Hooters employees was the first to break the news as they held posters on the sidewalk out front of the Williston road establishment. This would be the last day for the sports bar and restaurant. It's going out of business. But no one is saying why.

Three-and-a-half years ago, Hooter's was just preparing to open. As we reported at the time, it promised to become a popular place. Dozens of people showed up back then for a soft opening.

No one we contacted among South Burlington officials had any information to tell us as of Sunday afternoon. This Hooters was not part of the parent corporation known as Hooters of America. Instead, it operated independently under license to use the Hooters name. But all of the employees here said they were told explicitly not to talk to us.

Danielle Bressette, a Hooters worker, said, "We can't say much about it. We're closing, it's just... I don't know... basically the end of it... We love this place, but what are you going to do?"

Channel 3 was told anonymously that the restaurant is looking to liquidate all of its equipment. The manager would not allow us inside. But several customers walked in -- to enjoy the place for one last time before Hooters calls it quits in Vermont.
