Some 18 fire departments fought a 6-alarm fire that broke out in downtown St. Johnsbury late Thursday night. A city block on Main Street went up in flames-- destroying several businesses and apartments.

Fire crews got the call shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday. They say the fire was fully engulfed when they arrived on scene. St. Johnsbury Fire Chief Troy Ruggles says the blaze started in an apartment above a convenience store. It spread from the four-story brick building to three other buildings in the historic district. The blaze spread quickly because of how the buildings were designed. Four buildings were burned and at least one is considered a total loss.

The Red Cross says nine families were displaced and some people were temporarily evacuated from their apartments on Prospect Street.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries. They were treated and released from the hospital.

WCAX News spoke with several of the business owners Friday morning. They said they were just devastated by the fire and one business owner said he will not rebuild.

Crews were still on the scene at noontime Friday putting out hot spots.
