Stockbridge, Vermont - August 20, 2009

You could get dizzy trying to keep up with Fred Wall. Wall owns Vermont River Tubing Company in Stockbridge.

Over the course of a hot week he'll load up his truck over 700 times shuttling tubers up and down the White River.

"We have people coming from all over the country to do this," Wall said.

The company is one of only a handful in the state offering river tubing trips. For $10 you get a tube and a shuttle up the river, and then you are on your own.

"We're the Stockbridge yacht club," Wall said. "Don't you recognize yachting when you see it?"

The 3-miles float takes about 2 hours. Slow enough to just sit back and watch the world go by.

"This is so much fun," said Michelle Ferguson of Virginia Beach, Va. "A lazy day on the river. Vacation... the only thing we are missing is a little drink."

"They like the foliage, they like the rocks. One time we had moose standing in the middle of the river. That was the highlight of the summer for those people," Wall said.

The water in most places is no more than a couple of feet deep but even in its deeper holes the bottom of the river is crystal clear. The perfect place to take a dip-- whether you want to or not.

"The kids dump them," Wall said. "They should teach them a lesson."

Summer in full swing in one of Vermont's natural playgrounds.

You can tube any river you want for free as long as you have a tube, but the beauty of this trip is you don't have to bring along two vehicles because you get a shuttle up the river which gives you more time to just sit back and relax.
