Fall Foliage Tour With The 251 Club-Caledonia County

The leaves are beginning to put on their annual fall show, and it's time to begin our Fall Foliage Tour. This year, we thought we'd go to the experts! The members of the 251 Club, those folks who've explored each and every one of the 251 towns in the state of Vermont. Our guides this week, John and Anna Jerry, from Lyndonville.

"It's something that's really enjoyable, it keeps us occupied, we meet new friends."

"Yes. Sometimes we just put the lunch in the car you know, and take off."

They have been exploring the state of Vermont for years, but they live in the northeast kingdom, and know this region better than anything else. We asked them to show us where to find the best foliage in this area.

"Beautiful! It's starting to look real good! And it's going to be really fantastic before the season is over. "

They showed us you don't have to go far, you can zig zag and loop around on some back roads and see some spectacular sights staying mostly in Lyndonville, Newark, and Burke. We turned off the main road, and headed for Newark Pond, and a little farther beyond that, Bald Hill Pond.

And while you can see many different scenes by driving through the back roads, it's a good idea to get out of the car once in awhile, so that you can enjoy the sounds and scents of the fall season as well.If you don't pack a lunch, you may need to stop along the way to keep your strength up!

"Sometimes we plan our trip based on where where the restaurant is, and where we want to have lunch or supper."

During the early stages of the foliage season, when much of the color is in the tops of the trees, John and Anna told us it's a good idea to drive through roads that will take you along a ridge where you can look down across a valley.

"It's higher elevations, you're looking down into the valleys so you're seeing farther away."

A route along Darling Hill Rd, highlights some spectacular vistas, and this brought us back down into East Burke, where there are several options for food, from cafe's to pizza, sandwiches and baked goods.

"And from there, we'll just have to see what goes on from there....."

This time of year, you can drive for as long as you have gas in your tank. Just bring your map, and a sense of adventure.
