James Oliver is the Chief Photographer at WCAX TV. He is a Burlington, VT native, grew up in the Old North End of the city and attended the University of Vermont.
Mr. Oliver is a Veteran of the US Army having served in Vietnam as a Combat Cinematographer and in the U.S. Army European Command as a cinematographer shooting training and propaganda films. He joined WCAX in 1969 as a Staff Photographer. In the days before videotape the job entailed shooting, processing and editing news as well as commercials on film. Throughout the 1970s he was primarily assigned to the Central Vermont Bureau.
Mr. Oliver worked with Marselis Parsons on the EMMY Award winning "Dimension" show in 1979. Mr. Oliver served as a Producer and eventually Co-Executive Producer of the station's coverage of UVM Hockey and Basketball Games when WCAX produced and broadcast live sports events. Mr. Oliver is particularly proud of the having been the Field Producer for the Vermont Bi-Centennial Series and the remote road shows produced by WCAX News in the 1990's. In 1995 he was promoted to his current position as Chief Photographer. In recognition of the work he has done in television news journalism in 1999 Oliver was awarded the "Vermont Associated Press Distinguished Service Award".
