Foliage Tour With The 251 Club-Windsor County

We took advantage of the sunshine Monday morning and went out on our last foliage tour with the 251 club. This time, photographer Andy Goodrich and I explored Windsor County, where the fall colors are just barely hanging on.

Columbus Day weekend is a popular weekend for fall foliage viewing and we were not alone in our quest for red and orange leaves. 251 Club member Drew Nelson met us among the other tourists at the Quechee Gorge to begin our trip. Drew Nelson and his wife visited each of the towns in Vermont, and he knows this particular area well.

We decided to get off the beaten path to see Dewey's Pond, before following the Ottaquechee River through Bridgewater, and into Plymouth.

"We would go into a town, my wife and I have a book on Vermont towns, it's an old one, but it describes certain buildings, or statues that might be in a town."

We got out of the car to walk around the Calvin Coolidge Homestead, which has everything from scenic vistas, to historic old buildings, historic old maples! The Nelsons have enjoyed visiting spots like this, and also meeting new people along the way.

"Every once in awhile, you have an opportunity to talk to somebody. I remember in Proctor, spending some time with a man in a cemetary, who had been in the marble business, and telling us about some of the projects he'd been on in the marble company. There's certainly a variety in the topography of Vermont. Where we are here, the valleys are a lot narrower. And when you get up north there are more wide open spaces."

Just around the corner, down Rt 100, and three lakes in a row. Amherst Lake, Echo Lake and Lake Rescue. Foliage season is often the last hurrah for summer camps on the lakes. But for those who are hardy enough to enjoy the autumn chill, the scenery, and the peace and quiet, can't be beat.
