Women Knit For Soldiers

Brattleboro, Vermont - December 1, 2009

Soldiers who are being deployed love to get care packages. That has some people in our region using their knitting skills to send some goodies overseas.

Once a week, a group of women in Brattleboro gathers together at the Knot Just Yarn shop with a patriotic mission, knitting helmet liners for soldiers heading to Afghanistan.

"The army issues them and silk one and they have written back and say a silk one just doesn't cut it. It is so cold there," said Elaine Bagley who helped organize the event.

The wool liners are worn under the combat helmets, protecting a soldier's face and neck from the elements.

"Make nice strong neck so they can cover up over their nose in Afghanistan," said Bagley.

Bagley helped organize this group of knitters, but the show of support is taking place at yarn shops across the region and throughout the rest of the county.

"Sometimes people feel so helpless. They don't know any soldiers in their own families and they want to do something," she said.

People like Claudia Owens.

"My father fought in World War II and I want to do something for the country of course I am not able to go over and fight," she said.

Owens has made 13 liners so far. She hopes they shield the soldiers from the cold and also remind them that there are people who care about their well being.

"Help them get through some tough times to let them know that people here in the states really care about them. Its hard for them to get packages or letters, but this is something that they can wear every day," said Owens.

The woman hope to send about 300 liners to the guard before their final deployment. It is a chance for them to say thanks for their service, by send a little warmth from home with them as they head overseas.

This is a national movement. Click here for more information.
