Vt. delegation visits guard training

Camp Atterbury, Indiana - January 26, 2010

Vermont National Guard soldiers training for Mission Afghanistan had some VIP visitors Monday.

Vermont's Congressional delegation joined Adjutant General Michael Dubie on a trip to Camp Atterbury in Indiana.

About 1,500 Vermont guard members in the 86th Brigade are in the final stages of training for their deployment to Afghanistan.

Sens. Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch checked out some of the mine-resistant vehicles and protective gear that will help keep soldiers safe.

The Vermont guard members are getting what's called mission-specific training at Atterbury. That includes learning how to avoid, detect and disarm roadside bombs-- called improvised explosive devices.

Exactly when the Vermont unit will deploy to Afghanistan remains unclear. Some additional training has been added since the unit's mission was changed in response to the president's new strategy in Afghanistan.
