Is Vermont exporting gun violence?

February 18, 2010

A national advocacy group says Vermont is not doing enough to prevent gun crime.

Vermont has among the least restrictive gun laws in the nation and the lowest rate of gun crimes. Last year, Vermont had only five homicides and none of them involved a gun.

But is Vermont exporting gun violence? The state does not require criminal background checks on private firearm sales, including those at gun shows. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says that's a loophole that allows gun traffickers to funnel illegal guns to felons and criminals in other states.

Gun rights groups say there is little hard evidence to support that claim.
