Company and family settle in inmate death

Ashley Ellis Ashley Ellis

Rutland, Vermont - April 13, 2010

The family of an inmate who died at the St. Albans prison last year has reached a settlement with the private company that was providing the health care.

Ashley Ellis, 23, of Rutland, died in August, less than two days into a 30-day prison sentence for a driving violation.

According to police reports, a missed phone call may be the reason Ellis did not receive needed medication for complications stemming from anorexia.

Ellis's family and private contractor Prison Health Services of Tennessee have reached an out-of-court settlement, the terms of which aren't being disclosed. The company is no longer contracted with the state.

However lawyers for the family say they're thinking about suing the state as well.
