Hoax calls target Vt. Guard families

Colchester, Vermont - April 16, 2010

A new worry for families of Vermont National Guard soldiers deployed in Afghanistan: Some have gotten hoax calls telling them their soldiers have been wounded.

According to guard officials, at least three families have gotten calls at night from an unidentified woman saying that she is sorry that their soldier has been wounded in Afghanistan, and then she hangs up.

"Our families are making great sacrifices and there is enough emotional turmoil with their loved ones in Afghanistan. You know, one occurrence is too many of that type of thing," said Lt. Col. Lloyd Goodrow said. "Our families have gone through enough already without having this abusive behavior happening by a fellow citizen."

If a guard soldier is actually injured the guard follows a formal protocol. The family would most likely hear first from the soldier or someone very close to him or her. Guard officials want all prank calls reported to the police.
