Vt. Army Guard deployment leaves Air Guard on call

Montpelier, Vermont - April 16, 2010

With so many Vermont Army National Guard members deployed, the responsibility to respond to a disaster close to home is now on the Air National Guard.

Right now 1,500 guard members are serving in Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. Michael Dubie says because of the deployment the Air Guard is now in charge of helping out if there's an emergency in state. And he's confident they have the resources needed since any future deployment schedules won't overlap.

"The next thing we're working on in the Air National Guard-- they will not deploy again until the beginning of 2011-- so by the time they are ready to deploy the air guard-- the Vermont Air Guard-- the army soldiers, the large army soldiers group will be back," Dubie said.

The Air National Guard just underwent the largest inspection from the U.S. Air Force in over a decade. It included a simulated combat operation. The base was rated excellent-- the highest rating.
